Poker - Betting at poker

The game of poker is designed as one where betting is very much part of the game, so that every variation of poker includes betting in one form or another. Depending on the game played, and the game rules played by, the number of betting rounds can vary, and the allowed betting amounts can vary, but the act of betting will always take place.

When a game of poker is begun, depending on the type of poker being played, some or all of the players have to begin by putting an amount into the pot – this is a central space in the centre of the table where all money being bet is placed. There are two methods used at the beginning of a game, antes and blinds. An ante is basically a forced bet. It is an amount of money that every player must put into the pot before the cards are dealt. A blind is also a forced bet, but only some of the players have to put it in to the pot. Normally it is the first two players to the left of the dealer. The first one will place a small blind into the pot and then the second will place a larger sum into the pot called the large blind. The reason only two players place blinds into the pot is that a blind is considered a live bet and therefore it is dealt with as part of the first betting round. When playing with blinds, no player can check during the first round of betting because of course it is considered that a bet has already been placed during that round.

In a standard typical betting round, regardless of the variation of game played, certain elements will always take place. The player beginning the round of betting will be determined by the rules of the game being played, but the betting will always move round to the left around the table. Each player has to make choices when it’s his or her turn to bet. You will first look at your hand including both open and hidden cards, and then you must choose to fold, check, call or raise. If you fold, then you lay down your cards and you are out of the game. If no one before you in the betting round has chosen to bet, then you can opt to check. Checking is where you choose not to bet, but you also choose not to fold. It’s effectively a way of saying I’ll wait and see what other people do before I decide. If someone before you in the betting round has placed a bet, then you cannot check. If you wish to stay in the game then you must then choose to either call or raise. If you opt to call then you place the same amount of money into the pot as the last person to place a bet put in. If you choose to raise, then you put a larger sum of money into the pot than the previous better put in.

Betting rounds continue in this way between deals until the last betting round has been completed at which point there is a show down. This is where any players remaining in the game show their hands to see who has the best hand and therefore who has won the game.
